Abstract

This study explores the intergenerational transition of play culture among Madurese families. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved 12 families representing three generations Generation X (45–58 years), Millennials (29–42 years), and Generation Alpha (5–12 years) across four regencies of Madura: Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, documentation, and brief observations, then analyzed thematically. Data trustworthiness was ensured through source triangulation and member checking. The findings reveal significant changes in play ecology across generations, including shifts from outdoor to digital spaces, collective to individual play, traditional to digital games, and flexible to restricted playtime. Parental supervision has also become increasingly intensive. Three major factors contribute to these changes: technological development, growing parental concerns about children's safety, and shifting parenting priorities toward security and academic achievement. The study concludes that Madurese play culture has transformed from an open, collective, nature-based, and unstructured play ecology into a more enclosed, individualistic, digital, structured, and closely supervised environment
